Five things

Yesterday I spent a pleasant couple of hours in the flow writing cards to some of the sweetest people in my world. It makes me happy knowing they’re going to find something bright and cheerful in the mail, just like I do every month with my stationery subscription from A Beautiful Mess. I love the Beautiful Mess girls and just about everything they do. Last summer they announced they’re working on a cookbook (yay!) but it’ll probably be another year and a half before it comes out (boo). Here’s four other highlights from last week.Β 

Five things May 2

1. Penguin Random House Canada sent me Well Preserved‘s new book, Batch: Over 200 Recipes, Tips and Techniques for a Well Preserved Kitchen. I see more pickles in our future! Along with canned peach slices, honeyed pear butter, plum leather and maybe even some maple cream fudge with rhubarb salt. Do you can, dehydrate, ferment, cellar, salt, smoke or infuse? What do you make?

2. Last night’s dinner, an impromptu dish I’m calling SuperGreens 10-Veggie Rotini with Crumbled Feta. There’s five veggies in the pasta (kale, broccoli, parsley, zucchini and spinach) and five veggies on the side. (The pasta is new from Catelli and was sent to me to try.) James asked why the rotini was green and Lily sneered “probably because there’s vegetables in it” (puh!) but they both ate it without any complaint. I dare say they even liked it! (Which isn’t going out on much of a limb since I just asked Lily what she thought of it and she said it was really good. )

3. A lemony zucchini cake in the house on Saturday, this one my first attempt from Layered: Baking, Building and Styling Spectacular Cakes by Tessa Huff. (Thank you Abrams Books!) It’s not half as pretty as the one in the book, but we think it’s pretty tasty.

4. And last week I started Duana Taha’s The Name Therapist: How Growing Up With My Odd Name Taught Me Everything You Need to Know About Yours. Name nerds, this is our book!Β Thanks to Penguin Random House Canada for sending it to me for review.

  1. I love your five things posts! I’ve been debating signing up for one of the A Beautiful Mess subscriptions. I want it, but I deffinitely don’t need it…yet ;). I got a copy of Batch this week and I can’t wait to jump into it. I really like the look of the book and the way they’ve laid it out.

    1. Thank you so much! Every month I look at what’s in ABM’s Messy Box and wish I could justify getting it (even one month) but I don’t scrapbook, so that would be a bit much. 😦 This week I barbecued a couple dozen peaches to make Batch’s canned peach slices (they recommend BBQ’ing the peaches to remove the skin) but I didn’t like the texture of the peaches afterwards (I don’t think they were ripe enough) so I used them in a crumble. But much more experimenting to come! What recipes do you think you’ll try?

  2. I just started preserving last year so I am super excited to see a new book from Well Preserved! It’s always great to have some new ideas πŸ™‚

  3. SPRING !!!!! Walking to the gym, seeing the buds come out on the trees right outside my second floor condo window, leaves on the tress camouflaging the store and parking lot across the street, seeing the grass get greener every day, feeling the sun on my back and nothing but sandals on my feet, hearing the birds singing their happy songs at four in the morning…..YEAH !!!!

    1. I’ll have what you’re having! πŸ™‚ Love your enthusiasm, and the buds budding on the tree outside our bedroom window (only fewer this year, since the City was just here to cut it back, DANG IT!!!).

  4. Ha! Impromptu dish πŸ˜€ It’s amazing how well your turned out, maybe you should try doing that again.
    The cake looks truly delicious, Julie! I love any sort of lemon cake πŸ™‚ And the book sounds intriguing (that unusual title!), I’ll be looking it up.

      1. I have a thing for unique names too πŸ˜€ Maemi (Japanese) means “smile of truth” hence my blog’s name; truthful child (the translation is just not the same in English πŸ™‚ ).
