Cosmic and Eternal Love by Amrita Sen + Win a copy!

She’s performed for Oprah and the Academy Awards, released records with Weezer and Pitbull, sings on a track on Justin Timberlake’s latest album, has an MBA from Harvard, designed a fashion line sold at Nordstrom and other stores, and just released her first book and accompanying CD. Oh and she called me today from her home in LA. No big deal LOL. Artist, entrepreneur and creative wonder woman Amrita Sen’s Cosmic and Eternal Love: An Everlasting Love Story & Coloring Book is a true labour of love: in addition to writing and illustrating the book, she also wrote, performed and produced the music CD that brings the story to life. Here’s a closer look at the book and an excerpt from today’s interview.

The book is Amrita’s reinterpretation of the Radha/Krishna story, an Indian mythology told and retold since it was said to be written by the sages some 5,000 years ago. Although she embellished the story, Amrita says key elements are true to the original: “Krishna and Radha are years apart, he’s rich and she’s poor, and he’s married to 10,000 women in the original and she’s married to one man. The concept is that you can fall in love with any person or idea but the love has to transcend everything on Earth. Their love is in the heavens.”

Q. I love the pairing of your illustrations with your music and adult colouring books are so popular — what sparked the idea to pair the two?

A. I did music and art because fundamentally it’s who I am. When I was a kid I started my creative life as a singer and my mother was also an artist and a singer and [the project] didn’t seem complete without the two.

Q. What do you listen to when you’re drawing?

A. Oh everything! Rap music, electronica, Bollywood music, modern rock. I grew up in New Jersey, so a lot of rock music.

Q. You’re currently producing a Broadway show. What’s next for you?

A. I’m working on my next book, the story of Buddha’s wife. My idea is to take all of these mythologies from around the world and retell them from a woman’s perspective. I want to do a Cleopatra retelling, a Mayan fire goddess, and so many others. And I want to evolve the colouring book into a creativity book where people could interact with it.

Q. What’s one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

A. That I’m a really fast runner. I train for an hour and a half every day, anywhere and everywhere. I do it because everything I do creatively is a job, and whenever something becomes a job there is responsibility and accountability, and you need an outlet where you’re not being measured. I couldn’t have done this project for a year without it.

Detail-oriented colourers will enjoy the intricate illustrations (‘tho there’s no rule that says you have to stay within the lines). And the music is a wonderful, sometimes soothing, sometimes upbeat, and sometimes sorrowful accompaniment to the book that really does bring the story to life.
