In Get Your Sh*t Together: How To Stop Worrying About What You Should Do So You Can Finish What You Need To Do And Start Doing What You Want To Do, author Sarah Knight says any goal can be accomplished if you break it into small, manageable chunks — you just need to strategize, focus and commit. She’s serious about helping people get their shit together, and she does it in the best way: with irreverent humour, relatable stories and solid advice. But as she warns in the introduction, if you don’t like colourful language, it’s probably not for you: “… unlike many traditional self-help authors, I am going to use the word shit 332 times (including several shitmanteaus of my own invention), so please do not go on Amazon saying you were expecting sunshine and kittens and got shitstorms and shittens.” Little, Brown and Company sent me a copy to review, and it’s some good shit.
Here’s the description on the back cover:
the-no-f*cks-given, no-holds-barred guide to living your best life
Ever find yourself stuck at the office — or just glued to the couch — when you really want to get out (for once), get to the gym (at last), and get started on that fun project you’re always putting off? You need to Get Your Sh*t Together. In The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck, “anti-guru” Sarah Knight introduced readers to the joy of mental decluttering. This book takes you one step further — helping you organize the f*cks you want and need to give and cut through the bullsh*t cycle of self-sabotage to get happy and stay that way. You’ll discover:
- The Power of Negative Thinking
- 3 simple tools for getting your sh*t together
- How to spend less and save more
- Ways to manage anxiety, avoid avoidance, and conquer your fear of failure
- And tons of other awesome sh*t!
Sarah got her shit together in a big way, saving enough money to leave her high-pressure career in the publishing industry to move to the Dominican Republic and work for herself. She shares how she did it (step one: by identifying what she did not want to be) with a problem-solving approach that can be applied to everything from clearing out your email in-box to leaving a toxic relationship. Ultimately change is a mental game, Sarah says, and you are the boss.
“You are the Tony Danza of your mind. Or the Judith Light? I don’t actually know which one of them was the boss.”
Time and time again, Sarah comes back to the Get Your Sh*t Together (GYST) formula: strategize, focus and commit aka make a plan, break it into small chunks over time and do the work. (“In this way, life is like an adult coloring book. You simply work your way through each little section until the big picture materializes before you.”) Some might find it repetitive, but I found it useful — by staying on message Sarah drives it home and her wit (including some hilarious pop culture references which may need to be updated in future editions) makes it an enjoyable ride.
Get Your Sh*t Together is one of the few self-help books that I’ve wanted to read again. And maybe the first that I’ve consciously put into action. (I’ve talked a little on social media about how I’m getting my fitness shit together with The Dailey Method‘s 30-Day Challenge. More on that in another post).
Have you read Get Your Sh*t Together or Sarah’s first book, The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck? What did you think?
