A Canadian subscription box for book lovers: September’s Sweet Reads Box + A giveaway!

I remember driving to a party years ago for my hubby’s colleagues and stressing about who I could talk to and what on earth could we have in common. While most of the guests congregated in the kitchen, I spent the first hour or so (or maybe it was a half hour, but it felt like forever) alone in the front room petting the dog. And ‘tho he was pretty good company, I felt pretty lame. Eventually a few people wandered in and stopped talking shop and instead launched into a spirited debate about the merits of different fonts. Reader, I don’t think I’d ever felt so relieved. Finally a conversation I could get in on! I put a tentative toe into the water with a comment or two, and soon found myself in the warm bosom (ha!) of a few kindred spirits. Unfortunately they tired of the topic before me and we couldn’t seem to connect on anything else so it was back to the dog but it was good for a while there — really good! Of course I still overanalyzed everything for the next couple of days (honestly it’s years later and I still worry what they must have thought of me), but I lived to go to other parties and even managed to find a few more kindred spirits. I’m telling you this because I know there’s a lot of you out there who hate small talk and large groups (and maybe even leaving the house, lol) and yet really want to connect. Finding kindred spirits in some of you has been one of the best things that has come from try small things. I feel like I found my people! And since a lot of my people are book people, I know you’re going to love the wonderful surprise that came in the mail for me this week, and could for you too.

Sweet Reads Box September 2017 opening

It’s a new Canadian subscription box for book lovers like us! Launched this month, the Sweet Reads Box aims to deliver some sweet, sweet “Me Time” each month with a fantastic novel and some special treats that go with the theme of the book. I received one free-of-charge to review, so let me show you what’s in this puppy!

First up, a giant sugar cookie. I’m going to have to hide this from this kids.

Sweet Reads Box September 2017 Fierce Kingdom 1

Sweet Reads Box September 2107 Fierce Kingdom 2

Now I have been wanting to read Fierce Kingdom since it came out this summer (It was Indigo’s Book Club pick for July and The Blondielocks Book Club‘s first book), so I was so happy to see it in the box. It’s a thriller about a mother and son whose trip to the zoo turns into an afternoon of terror. Here’s the description from the inside flap of the book:

“The zoo is nearly empty as Joan and her four-year-old son soak up the last few moments of playtime. They are happy, and the day has been close to perfect. But what Joan sees as she hustles her son toward the exit gate minutes before closing time sends her sprinting back into the zoo, her child in her arms. And for the next three hours — the entire scope of the novel — she keeps on running.

Joan’s intimate knowledge of her son and of the zoo itself — the hidden pathways and under-renovation exhibits, the best spots on the carousel and overstocked snack machines — transform her into the hero she and her son need to stay a step ahead of danger.

A masterful thrill ride and an exploration of motherhood itself — from its tender moments of grace to its savage power — Fierce Kingdom asks where the boundary is between our animal instinct to survive and our human duty to protect another. For whom should a mother risk her life?”

Okay super cute tea steeper!! The card that comes with the subscription box says the elephant exhibit at the zoo is an important feature in the novel so how perfect is this?

Sweet Reads Box September 2017 Tea-Gram A Mother's Love tea

“A Mother’s Love” summer rose tea. Again, such a fitting tie-in to the theme of the book!

Sweet Reads September 2017 Foxy Originals necklace 1

And from Foxy Originals, the Canadian jewellery company you know I love (and so many of you do too) …

Sweet Reads Box September 2017 Foxy Originals Necklace e.e. cummings close up

… a gorgeous Canadian-made, lead-free necklace with a lovely quote from e. e. Cummings: “You are my sun, my moon, and all of my stars.” I don’t know if you can see it here, but there’s even a little silver moon attached! I just love it. I love the whole thing!

Now you want to know how much it costs. Well, a one-month subscription is $49.99 plus taxes and shipping (the Sweet Reads Box is currently shipping in Canada), and for that you get a box containing goods valued at $75. Three- and six-month subscriptions are a little bit cheaper and if you sign up for the Sweet Reads Box newsletter you’ll get a 10% discount on those ones.

So no, the box isn’t cheap but I think you get what you pay for. In this case, it’s a thoughtfully curated collection of bookish treats (plus the book!) that would take you ages to come up with and find if you were putting something similar together yourself, and you get it delivered to your door! A single box or a subscription would make a fantastic gift. And it’s a Canadian company. Kinda nice to support Canadians doin’ it for themselves, am I right?

Who will you buy The Sweet Reads Box for? Yourself? Friends and Family? Perhaps your favourite blogger? 🙂

I would love to find a copy of Just Like Family by Kate Hilton in one of the boxes. I’m not sure it would fit with their themes, but it’s one i’ve been wanting to read.
