Thomas Allen & Son sent me Slothilda and A Sloth’s Guide to Taking it Easy in exchange for an honest review. So here’s what I think.
They say you should write what you know. Well let me tell you, I know a thing or two about being a sloth. That’s not to say I sit in a tree all day eating leaves REALLY, REALLY SLOWLY, but finishing a box of chocolates on the couch can take me an afternoon and that’s pretty much the same thing. Maybe being a sloth isn’t so bad. Maybe it’s even good! Especially coming into the holiday season when so many of us would be happier doing less. Today I’ve got two books that celebrate that sloth life — one with 20 tips on how to embrace your inner sluggard and CHILLAX and another about a relatable little sloth who really wants to succeed and grow but also really likes sleep and junk food and her phone, laptop and TV.
First, A Sloth’s Guide to Taking it Easy: Be More Sloth With These Fail-Safe Tips for Serious Chilling by Sarah Jackson.
It’s a slim little book with just over 60 pages and three parts.
In the introduction we meet Brian, a friendly three-told sloth whose decades of experience practicing the art of relaxation make him the perfect mentor on our journey to a slower, zen-er life.
In the second part Brian shares his 20 tips for taking it easy. Most of these won’t be new, but the way they’re presented (gentle suggestions illustrated with humour) make chilling-out seem totally do-able whether you’ve got a minute to take a deep breath or hug a friend or a week for a vacation.
And in the last part, a few pages of favourite quotes from ancient philosophers (Confucius, Budda) and modern ones (Dalai Lama, Bob Marley). It’s a cute book for those who need a reminder to slow down from time to time and take care of themselves, or people who just love everything sloth.
Slothilda: Living the Sloth Life by former Simpsons animator Dante Fabiero is a collection of comics starring a loveable (and very sleepy) sloth named Slothilda. She wants to eat healthy and exercise and finish what she started but she’s lazy and sleepy and hello! There’s pizza!
“… being a sloth is part of life — and sometimes, the most enjoyable part of life. So next time you’re tempted to indulge in a bout of binge watching, Internet surfing, and couch-potato-ing . . . don’t feel bad. Embrace your inner Slothilda!” — Dante Fabiero, Slothilda: Living the Sloth Life
Dante launched Slothtilda.com in 2014 and has had something like half a billion views on Giphy. Anyone who loves his animated gifs will be happy to see the comics in print. (And if you haven’t yet seen our little sloth friend, I think you’re going to love her!)
The gif above and the one below are both pictured in the book, where the comics are organized in themes: fitness, food, work, money, home, lifestyle, fur baby, and gratitude. I’d seen maybe a third of the illustrations on social media, but the remaining ones were all new to me and made me laugh out loud.
I could watch that for hours. (Being very good at slothing and whatnot.)
This next gif isn’t in the book, but it’s one of my favourites.
This is so me it’s uncanny, LOL. Every time you like or comment on or share one of my posts I feel exactly the same way!! (THANK YOU EVERYBODY!!)
