The Hygge Holiday Box from Hygge in a Box ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

Happy new year! ๐ŸŽ‰ I hope you had a great holiday. I thought I’d share a couple of boxes between Christmas and New Year’s and logged on to write a few times but didn’t get any further than that. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ I really just needed the break. We’re back to online learning here in Ontario with the Omicron surge so that’s not ideal but we’ll do like Nemo and just keep swimming. Maybe not butterfly strokes — dog-paddling and treading water, mostly — but doing what we can to stay afloat. Hygge helps. “Simply put, it’s when you’re cozy and you feel good about it,” say Jill Kantor and Lisa Kroft, founders of Hygge in a Box. You know, that unique contentment you feel when you bundle up and go for a walk in the crisp wintery air or curl up by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate or have a good soak with your favourite bath salts. In addition to their seasonal boxes, Jill and Lisa curated a limited edition Hygge Holiday Box to help subscribers enjoy hygge moments at a time when they’re needed the most. (Well arguably the holidays *and* now. We need all the hygge we can find now too.)

Like the seasonal boxes, this one was available in two sizes. I ordered the larger deluxe one (the one in this post) for my mother-in-law for Christmas and Jill and Lisa were kind enough to customize it for her needs. (She’s in a hospital so no candles, etc.) If you have particular products in mind or needs to accommodate, reach out to Jill and Lisa and they’ll work with you. (You can learn more about their custom hygge boxes here.)

Each Hygge Holiday Box opened with a couple of cards — this one an introduction to the box + hygge tips — and another (not pictured) with exclusive discounts from each of the makers inside. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Normally there’s a card with detailed descriptions of products but shipping delays for some items meant it couldn’t be finalized and printed in time. I’ve excerpted from the draft Jill and Lisa sent me in italics below.

Hand-Embroidered Ornament (Pokoloko) ยท These ornaments are made by female victims of domestic and sexual violence organized together as a group of artisans by three Peruvian female entrepreneurs. These makers carefully cut a synthetic felt base into shape, and then hand-embroider each ornamentโ€™s design with an alpaca blended yarn. Their artisanal work gives each of these women sustainable income sources for themselves and their families.

Frostbite Soy Wax Candle (Wild Flicker) ยท Take a deep breath in and enjoy the crisp winter air. A blend of eucalyptus and peppermint. Hand poured in small batches; made from all-natural soy wax; lead-free wicks; phthalate and paraben-free fragrance. Made in Ontario. Approximate burn time: 47 hours.

Snickerdoodle Marshmallows (Lolly’s Baking) ยท Vanilla flavoured marshmallow swirled with a cinnamon sugar filling and topped with a dusting of cinnamon sugar. Perfectly paired with the Lux hot chocolate, in a s’more or on its own. Each bag contains 12 hand-cut marshmallows. Made in British Columbia.

LUX Hot Chocolate (Lemon Lily) ยท Imagine the best Peruvian cacao in the world transformed into the most beautiful organic hot chocolate on the planet.ย  Meet LUX. Cocoa powder is the core of a chocolate’s flavour.ย  We naturally alkalize it (Dutched) to neutralize cocoa’s acidity.ย  The end result is rich and wonderful chocolate.ย  Our sweetened Lux is more sweetened than our original for those who enjoy the sweeter things. Organic, natural, vegan. Made in Ontario.

Woodlands Bath Soak (Dadirri Naturals) ยท Bring the scent of the forest into your bathtub as the woodsy blend of essential oils ease sore muscles and tired minds. Whether you spend your days shredding fresh powder, biking through trails, or swimming in lakes, this soak is the perfect end to your adventurous day. Made in Manitoba.

Candy Cane Beach Glass Soap (Sealuxe) ยท Our classic single serve soap is peppermint-scented and coloured with red, white, and green to evoke happy memories of decorating the tree and opening presents. Made in British Columbia.

The Hygge Holiday Box included one of two books, Platters & Boards: Beautiful, Casual Spreads for Every Occasion or this one, Aprรจs All Day: 65 Cozy Recipes to Share with Family & Friends.

For ski bums and non-skiers who enjoy the snow, here is a cozy winter cookbook of 65+ hearty recipes, plus beautiful photography that captures the aprรจs-ski culture and mountain town life. Aprรจs-ski is more than just an afternoon beer in the lodge. It’s an opportunity to gather with friends and family over delicious food and drinks during the cold winter months. This cozy cookbook invites home cooks of all levels to embrace the aprรจs culture all season long, whether they’re the first skier on the slopes in the morning or a non-skier who prefers to snuggle up by the fireplace.

Candle Snuffer (Wild Flicker) ยท Using a candle snuffer allows you to snuff out your candle after each burn. Snuffing your candle help it burn cleaner and is the safest way to stop burning your candle.

The Hygge Holiday Box included one of two Spark Boxes, Spark Gratitude: 50 Ways to Appreciate Every Day and this one, Spark Good Cheer: 50 Ways to Get Festive.

Kindle the holiday spirit! This new addition to the bestselling Spark series is a sweet way to spark seasonal joy for loved ones or yourself. Inside the gilded matchbox are 50 faux matchsticks featuring prompts to light up your days with joy, love, and peace. Slide open this shimmering box to reveal the matchsticks, then pick one and follow the prompt for wintertime merry-making! Sample prompts: Undertake an all-day baking project. Buy a gift for a child in need. Turn off all the lights and have a meal by candlelight. Host a holiday-themed scavenger hunt.

And a recipe, Mom’s Whiskey Bread Pudding. (Jill and Lisa’s mom! Did you know they’re sisters?)

The holidays may be behind us but I’m still enjoying so many of the treats in this wonderful hygge box (all but the marshmallows and the hot choco ๐Ÿคค๐Ÿคค #gonetoosoon). I’ve been going for walks just about every day since my mom was here for Christmas (not *because* she was here ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ — we went together) and the woodsy bath soak is wonderful to sink into after being out in the cold. (And you can totally use it as a foot soak if you prefer.) We have lots of the candy cane soap left and the peppermint smells wonderful and uplifting, as does the candle with the fresh minty and eucalyptus scent. The Aprรจs All Day cookbook makes me want to get back on the slopes with some backcountry banana bread cookies or cherry chocolate chunk granola bars in my pocket or tuck into a classic beef stew with cheesy garlic bread. ๐Ÿ˜‹ So many great-looking recipes, stick-to-your-ribs comfort food we’re craving this time of year. Jill and Lisa did a phenomenal job curating this box!!
