I’ve been at my wit’s end this week struggling to find ways to entertain the kids (and keep my sanity!) in the last couple of days before they’re back in school. What’s saved us is one of the most simple activities: colouring. And not just the kids, but me too. Penguin Random House sent me a copy of the adult colouring bookย OUTSIDE THE LINES, TOO: An Inspired and Inventive Coloring Book by Creative Mastermindsย curated by Souris Hong, and within minutes of putting my pencil crayons to paper I started to feel my frustrations melt away.ย
The book is a follow-up to the 2013 bestseller, OUTSIDE THE LINES, and like the first it’s filled with drawings from graphic artists, illustrators, photographers, street artists, filmmakers and more. I recognized only two of the names so for me it’s very much an introduction toย contemporary art.
Many by Ryan Seslow
The range of detail in the drawings varies widely, as does the mood. Some evoke fear, others happiness and so many, wonder. Which makes for a great conversation starter — if you like company while you colour. The sheets are perforated so you can easily tear them out and share them around.
